An Ode to Madhuri Dixit-Nene & her Leading Men on her Birthday

Where does one start when introducing a talented individual whose smile is enough to melt the hearts of her fans? Do I begin with her renowned dancing skills, her fabulously performed roles or her ability to light up the screen with her presence? Madhuri Dixit does all of these and more. The actress recently graced the TV screens again as a judge in the dance reality TV show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa Season 4. In the new avatar, it became possible to witness the love her fans and industry members still have in their hearts for her and her humility towards their feelings. There is one particular line said by the beautiful actress which inspired me no end, “I know I’m good so there has never been a reason for me to say anybody else is bad”. Her obvious humbleness coupled with her poise is perhaps what keeps everyone’s heart’s beating for this wonderful lady who was once unbeatable in popularity for Indian cinema.

On a personal level, I feel that this actress brought sparkling magic to the jodis she was a part of which in turn went on to deliver some of the most celebrated movies in the last two decades. I would like to take a look at the actors she paired so well with and the infamous movies which left us wanting more…

Madhuri with Anil Kapoor

This particular pairing was noticed very early on in both of their respective acting careers.Tezaab (1988) was the film that gave birth to this fabulous duo and it seems their delight only got stronger with each film they were in together. From Ram Lakhan (1989) to the most recent Pukar (1999), every time the two came together it seems the audiences held their breath for yet another magical extravaganza. Some of the most popular songs the duo brought to life are “Mera naam hai Lakhan” (Ram Lakhan), “Koyal si teri boli” (Beta) and “Paayal meri” (Raj Kumar).

 Madhuri with Aamir Khan

First seen in the memorable film Dil (1990), this jodi was arguably the epitome of youth and first love. With both being talents to be reckoned with, the pair were seen together not long after in Deewana Mujsa Nahin (1991). It seems after this movie, the duo just weren’t brought together or when an attempt was made, it just wasn’t meant to be. Having said that, the impact of this jodi was no less what with Dil being a film referred to many a time because of the sheer classicness it brings to everyone’s hearts. If anyone reading has any kind of power then please bring these two together once more! The legendary “Mujhe neend na aaye” from Dil shows off their innocence to a tee!

Madhuri with Jackie Shroff

This jodi was perhaps one of the most under-rated of them all but my choice to include should say it all. With Shroff’s fine-looking and clean appearance complimenting Dixit’s splendour almost perfectly, the two did a handful of films together, not all of which saw them romantically paired opposite each other. From Uttar Dakshin (1987) to Devdas (2002), the two are perhaps one of the most versatile of them all. As a result, Shroff can be seen as Dixit’s most treasured leading man in the truest sense. Remembered songs of theirs include “Sun Beliya” (100 Days), “O Rabba” (Sangeet) and “Chalak Chalak” (Devdas).

Madhuri with Sunjay Dutt

This twosome are remembered for the warmth in romance they brought to the screen. Sunjay Dutt, although more known for his rugged roles, seemed to become that much more softer and more passionate when pitted against this beautiful lady. The love triangle in Saajan (1991) where Dutt renders the role of a poet who dedicates his creations to Dixit is perhaps the one film the audiences hold closest to their hearts. Khalnayak (1992) also saw this duo come together again in an experimental way which saw Dutt’s gangster type-cast work wonders. Their most memorable songs include “Tamma Tamma Loge” (Thanedaar), “Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Pagal” (Saajan) and “Choli Ke Peeche” (Khalnayak). The two were rumoured to be “just good friends” during the making of a number of these films and it is possible that their popularity could have stemmed from their close relatonship off-screen. The two are rumoured to be coming together again in the remake of Satte Pe Satta and I have no doubt their new-and-improved version will do more than justice to their previous films and hit pairing.

 Madhuri with Salman Khan

This jodi has been, quite frankly, history in the making. First seen together in Saajan (1991) and in films such as Dil Tera Aashiq (1993) and Hum Aapke Hai Koun (1994) thereafter, this was arguably one of the most good-looking pairs in recent times. Khan’s handsome persona and Dixit’s unmatchable radiance makes them sizzle on screen in even the sweetest love stories. Their most notable movie, Hum Aapke Hai Koun, is considered to be one of the most successful film of its times. The couple were last seen on screen together along with Shah Rukh Khan in Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam. In roles not in keeping with the norm, the two were not playing lovers but more childhood friends. It is safe to say that despite this change in equations for the film, seeing them sharing screen presence once again was unexplainably heart-warming.

 Madhuri with Shah Rukh Khan

Last but not the least, possibly the most admired jodi of them all. 1993 saw their initial collaboration in Anjaam where Khan was seen in a negative role. Following that, the two reunited in Koyla (1996), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam (2001) and, most recently, Devdas (2002). Creating ripples in all of their films bar one, the twosome are unique together. The enchantment they created in Dil To Pagal Hai could not have been created by any other actors in their era. It is this very fact that makes them easily one of the best jodis of their generation. Their recent performance at the Filmfare Awards took us back in time and made us sigh, “they don’t make them like that anymore”. Rightly so!

And with that, this dedication comes to a timely end. Here’s wishing the leading lady a very happy birthday and wishing her a very prosperous year ahead. I hope she graces our screens all the more and shows people how it’s REALLY done. For me, this particular actress is totally unbeatable in natural talent and in depicting Indian beauty to it’s core. Her magnificence speaks volumes despite her being absent from our screens. You know it’s real love when the sentiments and affection continues to grow no matter the distance. Such is the adulation in the hearts of the fans and well-wishers of Mrs Madhuri Dixit-Nene!
