Happy Birthday to… ME!

It’s just a few hours until it’s officially my birthday and I’m feeling…. erm… totally detached. I’ve been experiencing what can only be described as “pre-birthday blues” for the last couple of days. I usually go through weird phases in the week or so approaching the big day. Being a typically emotionally driven Scorpion, birthdays – especially in the last few years – have seen my mind work overtime. Birthdays have become a time to reflect, a time to sit down and take stock of all around me and most of all to put things into gear and appreciate what I have and what I can set in stone for the future. I know it must sound stupid because, in reality, nobody can say that the future even exists but planning for it is carried out by all.

This year, thanks to my wonderful Facebook and Twitter family, I’ve decided to mark my birthday by revealing everything YOU have wanted to know about me. Don’t say I didn’t warn you… but here we go!

The Filmi

If there was one film (Bollywood of course) where you would have liked to have played the leading lady, which would it be…and why ?

Wow, this is a hard question! (After some thought…) There are two ways in which I can perceive this question. I could answer it as if I was an actress and talk about a film which in which the leading lady would have played my dream role or I can reveal it in the context of where I would happily swap my actual life for that movie’s leading lady’s. I will answer in the latter I think. The movie would have to be Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and the character of Nandini, played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

My reason for choosing HDDCS is not quite that simple and it’s taken me some time to arrive at that answer. The course of the movie runs pretty much like all Bollywood movies did until that time but the climax and end of the film were hugely impactful on a very impressionable me. The role of Nandini as the protagonist is not one I identify with at every stage of the movie but her character is one that teaches me a lot about life and about attitudes. It also shows that life isn’t about the smooth paths and easy results; it’s also about perceptions.

If you could be an actress,  which one would you be and why?

Hmmm… this is an easy question! I don’t think I would ever want to be an actress. However, if I really HAVE to choose then it would have to be Katrina Kaif. Don’t all jump at me at once because I’ve made it very well known that I’m not a huge fan of the actress. I would choose to be her because she’s made the right career choices so far and has also realised that limiting herself and joining a specific ‘camp’ would be detrimental to her future. Hats off to Ms Kaif for being a clever cookie!

You’ve been hired by Karan Johar to direct his next blockbuster and it’s a typical family film. Who would be your star cast?

This would depend a lot on the actual story and who I would see as fitting into the skins of the characters. If it was to be a typical ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ family then I think I would choose as follows: Kiran Kumar (Father & head of the family), Kirron Kher (Loving mother), Rahul Khanna (Elder son), Konkona Sen Sharma (Elder daughter-in-law), Ranveer Singh (Younger son), Anushka Sharma (Younger daughter-in-law). A total khichdi of talent there but there we have my choice!

Of the actors/actresses who’ve joined the industry since 2000, name the top 3 most versatile.

I think I would definitely, without a shadow of doubt, have Priyanka Chopra topping my list. I think her talent is bigger and worthy of any role. My second of the three would be Hrithik Roshan and I don’t feel this choice needs any justification. The third would be… erm… Well, I can’t choose between Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma. There have been SO many actors and actresses who have debuted in the last decade and it would be impossible to narrow it down quite so much but I hope my choices are good ones!

If you could hang on the sets (or work on the sets) of an upcoming film, which film would it be and why?

This is a complete no-brainer! It would have to be Krrish 2!

The Not-So-Filmi

If you were a fruit, which one would you be and why?

Ummm… a pineapple! It’s my favourite fruit and cutting it is a lot of hard work. The taste is worth all that effort and that’s why I would choose to be one of those. Hope this makes sense!

If you had the power to ignite change in the world, and could choose only one, what would it be and roughly how would you go about doing it?

This is one of those questions that I can picture being asked in the Miss World pageant, haha! If I could choose to change the world, the one thing I would want to do is restore people’s respect for each other. In society today, especially in London, I don’t see people as actively caring about each other and I figure they can only care if they give another person respect. In terms of how I would go about bringing this about… well, I don’t know how you can give birth to respect within people but it would be a good start if society and children were taught to think respectfully from a young age. It’s not an overnight change but more the changing of attitudes that is needed.

What do you love most about Twitter?

I love being able to interact and share my thoughts with people of different countries and from different walks of life.

What is the best compliment that you’ve received till date?

I’m going to cheat on this one about say there are two compliments that particularly stand out in my mind. The first would be compliments for my writing. The thoughts and words of people who read my work and are appreciative of it always touches my heart. The second would be my modesty… although I’m not sure it’s strictly a compliment!

What are you are crazy about?

I’m crazy about Bollywood!

What do you value most in life?

My relationships, whether with family or friends. Relationships, ties and people mean so much more to me than credentials, work or popularity. To me, everything else is material but people should be valued. It’s a pity not many out there share my thoughts on this.

Name three things that people do not know about you.

1) I’m the kind of person who randomly buys gifts for special people.

2) I hate being the centre of attention.

3) I can’t stand the colour Yellow.

Name three things you dislike the most.

1) Dishonesty

2) Being ignored

3) The smell of Ghee

One thing you miss about being a kid.

Not knowing what a broken heart feels like.

One skill you wish you had.

I wish I was as good at numbers as I am at words.

Is there any language that you would like to learn?

I have a GCSE qualification in French but I didn’t keep practicing. I would love to brush-up on my French!

Which two things you are really good at?

I’m good at writing, as I hope those reading will agree! I think i’m also good at over-thinking things and frustrating the hell out of myself! This isn’t a good quality but it’s a quality nonetheless.

Whom do you want to meet right now?

There is a very dear friend in mind when reading this Q. I’d like to meet him! 🙂

What brings a smile on your face instantly?

Babies! I love kids… and babies instantly make me smile from ear to ear.

What’s the first thing you notice about people?

I think it would either be their eyes or how often they smile. You can tell a lot about a person by just observing these two things, even before they open their mouths!

Do you prefer Summer/Winter?

Undoubtedly winter! I love the cold, it’s SO romantic!

What would you wish for if you had 3 wishes?

1) The eternal happiness of my loved ones.

2) Never to win the Lotto jackpot because money is the root of ALL evil.

3) The ability to always see people for who/what they are.

What or who is your inspiration?

It would be wrong to pinpoint just one thing or one person. I’ve been inspired by some beautiful people in my life over the years and I continue to let myself be inspired by everyone. These little inspirations in my everyday life help me to become the person I want to be.

One word to describe you?

Opinionated.

What do you love the most in your work?

There are so many things. I guess the best way to describe it would be that I love that I love my work… without that kind of passion and feeling towards work, one would have gone mad. I’ve been there, done that and almost gone mad so it’s nice to be able to now do things which I feel make a difference to others and matter to me too.

Well that was the last question of the list! I will sign off by telling all you wonderful readers how thankful I am that you take the time to read my blog and support me. without your support I wouldn’t be where I am today and I wouldn’t be thanking my lucky stars on this birthday eve. Be happy y’all!
