Out with the old and in with the new. It’s a brand new year and on the eve of the day 2012’s first Bollywood release hits cinemas, here I am finding myself thinking exactly how this year will pan out for the industry. I’ve watched a few trailers and songs of some forthcoming movies but what about the movies that are expected during the course of the year? Well… here is my personal list of the movies I’m going to be waiting eagerly for. Do share your thoughts with me…
Starring today’s ‘hot property’ Vidya Balan, this movie comes first in my list purely because I’ve just caught it’s trailer. In what promises to be a tale of frustration, confusion and thrills, Kahaani seems to be putting Balan in yet another fresh new avatar. The story surrounds an expectant mother (played by Balan) who is looking for her missing husband. She soon discovers a web of lies in the Indian city of Kolkata but is full of determination to discover the actual truth. I think this has “award-winning performance” written all over it for Balan yet again.
I’m sure this movie would be top of anyone’s list as ones to look out for and it’s release is a mere few weeks away. Produced under the Dharma banner and starring the likes of Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Sunjay Dutt and Rishi Kapoor, this is (as all should be aware by now) a remake of the Amitabh Bachchan starrer of 1990. Roshan takes on the role of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan and the film is sure to provide a fresh take on an old classic. Kapoor will be seen in negative shades and is sure to charm the audiences with his performance.
I hold my hands up and say when viewing the first trailer, I thought Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan made the oddest couple. However, after seeing some of the song promos and having the music grow on me, I think their oddness is the USP of what should be a very upbeat movie. Of course, it could go completely the other way too and not live up to the promise of freshness and laughs that is portrayed. I’m looking forward to it nonetheless!
Yes, yes, yes! Ranveer Singh will strike again in October (26th to be precise) but this time one will see him minus Anushka Sharma. His co-star in this, his forthcoming, is the Dabangg girl Sonakshi Sinha. I think seeing Singh with another co-star will take a little getting used to but it’s a movie I am eagering awaiting. Set in the 1950s, this movie is sure going to be a style statement of sorts and what with the impeccable direction of Vikram Aditya Motwane, I would be surprised if I’m the only one looking forward to this.
Following much controversy, it’s set in stone that this movie’s leading lady is Kareena Kapoor. Kapoor will play the lead in a story that focuses on the career and times of a superstar. I have full faith that Madhur Bhandarkar will make a huge success of this movie. Heroine also stars Arjun Rampal, Randeep Hooda and Shahana Goswami. I’m very glad to be seeing Kapoor and Rampal brought together again after the debacle that was We Are Family.
Based on the much-loved Gol Maal from 1979, this movie is sure to be tickling your funny bone… or will it? Rohit Shetty hope it will but this remains to be seen. Abhishek Bachchan will be seen with Ajay Devgan and Prachi Desai in the lead roles and (as per the many mentions on Comedy Circus), Archana Puran Singh and Krishna (nephew of Govinda) will also grace our screens in this movie. This will be Shetty’s attempt at reviving the kind of comedy that died many years ago. If successful, I’m sure it will give way to many of it’s kind.
I am so excited to see Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor being brought together once again despite Anjaana Anjaani not doing so well with the masses. Directed by Anurag Basu and set for release on 13 July, Barfi’s plot surround the story of an impaired (in speech and hearing) man and a mentally unwell woman. The movie promises to be the kind of love story which is rarely sees light. It’s beauty could very well surpass the greatest love stories Bollywood has ever seen… let’s hope Basu doesn’t take inspiration from Kites.
After the spectacular success of Dabangg, it was more than inevitable that the Khans would want to re-explore the same magic again with a sequel. I am usually all for sequels but with this franchise I am quite apprehensive. It is still one to look forward to nonetheless because it carries on the same characters and Chulbul Pandey is a character I loved on screen. I sincerely hope this one does just as well if not better than the original… and then it really will be hats off to Mr Arbaaz Khan.
This is the movie that I think will put Vivek Oberoi back on everyone’s radar before 2013’s Krrish 2. Oberoi, undoubtedly, carries of the baddies better than the heroes and in ZG, he will be doing just that. Also starring Sunjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi and Minissha Lamba to name a few, it is based on a true story about a gang war in Ghaziabad between two groups. ZG should deliver a movie of the kind that hasn’t been seen in Bollywood for some time and the gangster-style may just be back in town all over again.
Saif and Kareena… Kareena and Saif. I can’t wait to see them sizzle with their real-life chemistry on screen again. This movie, produced by Saif, is definitely on the most anticipated list. The movie is set for release in March and will see Kareena in an action-packed role following her stint in Tashan. It is rumoured that the celebrity couple will get married soon after this movies release and this gives all the more reason to wait for it’s release.
The one and only reason I am looking forward to this one is because of the return of the beautiful Sridevi. Oh and also seeing her share screen space with Amitabh Bachchan and reminding me of the magic they shared in Khuda Gawah some twenty years ago. It surrounds the story of a lady who, in order to please her family, enrols on an English-speaking course. I hope it creates the kind of magic on screen that we’re all expecting to see.
Another comeback will happen in 2012 and it will be that of Karisma Kapoor. In this movie she renders the role of a model who happily gives up her career to be with the one she loves. To her horror, the story takes a turn for the worse when her fiance is abducted before their wedding. In a character that is perhaps a little hatke, Kapoor is sure to impress all over again. The film is directed by Vikram Bhatt and rumours are rife that Kapoor and her co-star Rajneish Duggall have some love-making scenes in the movie. Wait and watch!
This is one of the YRF projects that I’m most looking forward to. Why? Well it will see the fantastic Parineeti Chopra back on the screens again following her amazing performance in Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and it will also see the debut of Arjun Kapoor, son of Boney Kapoor. It will see the story of two people who “are born to hate, but destined to love”. If the first look poster is anything to go by, it is sure to be a love story with a difference. Rumour has it that Katrina Kaif will have an item number in the movie as well… let’s hope it’s not another Chikni Chameli equivalent!
Ek Tha Tiger
The final movie on my personal “to-watch-out-for” list is the Salman and Katrina starrer, directed by Kabir Khan. The tag-line in the poster released by YRF stated, “All his life he fought for his country, this time he will fight for his love”. I’m personally really unsure about the chemistry of Salman and Katrina on-screen andbelieve they are only a successful jodi because the audiences knew of their love for one another. Having said that, I also hope that this isn’t of the standard that Ready and Bodyguard were but that it actually aims a little higher to get the audience’s love.
I know most of you will comment and wonder why I’ve missed out so many movies which are expected in 2012. All I have to say is that, as already stated, I don’t really believe in sequels because I think they can sometimes take a lot away from a much-loved original. I have chosen not to include many of the sequels that are to be released in the coming 12 months. It will remain to be seen whether they work or whether the makers should have just left well alone.
Do share your anticipations and thoughts with me!
