Month of Love: Interview with Daniel Pillai

♥ February is, undoubtedly, a month of love. To mark the shortest month of the year and the whole lot of love that is incorporated smack bang in the middle of it, I thought I would do something different on my blog. This will be a month that will be star-studded. From fellow writers to friends to some well-known names… they’re all stars in my eyes and they will be sharing a little about themselves (and their talent) with me – and with you (along with some Valentine’s fun thrown in for good measure!). ♥

In this day and age, it’s all the more easier – with the help of social media – to come across like-minded people who share your passion. Whether it’s a sparkle of conversation or a shared like (or dislike) of something, it’s always about those who are passionate. In comes Daniel Pillai who shares my passion for Bollywood and also writing. He’s a friend from across the seas who has always been there with an encouraging word when I’ve needed it the most. I am so glad he agreed to be featured in my special month of love. He shares the depths of his passion and his journey… all the way from Toronto!

♥ You are a multi-talented guy! Tell me a little about your very many talents as an entertainment journalist and your journey so far.
Haha, thank you for that Amrita! I suppose the right way to describe myself is multi-passionate. I have many passions and they all exist in different areas whether it is food, fashion, films or Bollywood. People will find that I put immense passion into everything that I do. Right now I am fortunate that what I am doing involves a lot of things that I am passionate about and that’s a good thing!

I appear as the buzzing “Bollywood Insider” on the leading Canadian South Asian entertainment show “Bollywood Boulevard” which airs on OMNI Television – here I discuss the latest news and tidbits that are rocking the world of Bollywood cinema. From red carpets, the latest film or music release and the latest celebrity sightings…I’m your man! In addition to this I am also writing for various publications including the Bollywood column for The Wall Street Journal and the fashion, lifestyle and cultural articles for Jugni Style. I should also mention here that I will be launching a very special project along with the team at Jugni Style shortly. A formal announcement will be made soon, but I promise that it will be fun, candid and totally me! It’s all fun and exciting!

♥ Do you have an special experience in your journey so far which stands out? What is it and why is it so special?
That’s a very tough question considering that I am still quite new to the world of media and entertainment. There is definitely a lot more for me to see, do and experience, but the most special moment so far has been meeting my friend, colleague and mentor Veronica Chail. Veronica is the host of “Bollywood Boulevard” and we connected shortly after the 2011 IIFA festivities which were held in my hometown of Toronto. We met and chatted over coffee, which then turned into a monthly coffee ritual. I suppose that during our conversations, Veronica noticed that I had a spark and felt it was appropriate for a career in media and entertainment – that’s how I landed on TV.  Veronica has helped me get to where I am today and I am happy to say that we’re the best of friends.

I think that meeting Veronica was destined to happen. Up until that point, I had worked through many trials and tribulations in my life and my entire existence was ready to absorb what was coming to me. I’ve always enjoyed being in front of the camera since I was a child, but I shied away from it after years of being bullied and not being myself. So when I reached a point in my life when I was finally ready to enjoy life on my own terms and be myself 100%, my path led me to Veronica. It’s a relationship that I truly cherish, and one that came about quite naturally.

♥ How do you personally define success?
There’s this one quote by Maya Angelou that I treasure, “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” At the end of the day, I want to go home feeling satisfied that what I have done, whether it be personal or career related, has been worth my time and effort, and that I enjoyed every single second of it. I’d also like to make sure that my family is taken care of in all respects. I want to be able to do this all while being myself and never sacrificing that. This is success to me!

♥ How significant is Valentine’s Day for you?
To be quite honest, it’s just another day on the calendar – but special because I can get candied cinnamon hearts readily at the local grocery shop!

♥ Your definition of love?
Love to me is comfort, passion, respect, honesty and ever-changing.

♥ Tell me about your personal fave love story (in the real or reel world)
Unfortunately, no real love stories to tell here, but since I am an avid Bollywood viewer, there are many reel love stories that I cherish. I simply love watching “Dil To Pagal Hai” because the love story in that film was all about destiny and soul mates and I love that kind of mush. Another reel love story I have enjoyed is “Jodhaa Akbar”, that love story was EPIC.

I’m sure you’ll agree that Daniel is quite simply one of the most positive souls ever. I send him big thanks for taking the time out to feature in this special month and wish that his Bollywood journey continues to gather strength. And any man who has love for my all-time fave movie, Dil To Pagal Hai, will always get my vote!
